Scott: [00:00:38] Hello everyone and welcome to the second episode of Shocking Gasp: A D&D podcast. Thanks for tuning in. I'm Scott, The Dungeon Master and I will be escorting us along this magical mystery tour. Let's meet the rest of the cast in increasing order of dice quantity. I think first up is Stephanie.
Stephanie: [00:00:56] Hey, it's Stephanie. I only have seven dice. Apparently I need to get more. I'm gonna be playing Gunda Glitterblaster. Yaaay.
Scott: [00:01:06] Next up is Jake.
Jake: [00:01:10] Holler. I will be playing Alnor "Tilly" Gladdenstone and I have 14 dice.
Scott: [00:01:16] Ohh Alex, can you top that?
Alex: [00:01:19] My name is Alex and I'll be playing Tychus Gemcutter and I have a whopping 20 dice in front of me.
Scott: [00:01:25] All right Steve what do you got?
Steve: [00:01:29] It's Steve. I'll be playing Amos Vonal, and for some who knows what thing I'm trying to make up for, I have 52 dice.
Scott: [00:01:37] We all know what you're trying to make up for.
Steve: [00:01:39] It's my small hands.
Scott: [00:01:40] But that is a lot of dice, that might be more than me. I only have, I only have like 30 dice in front of me right now. I thought that was too much. So some of you may be wondering why we're introducing the cast in order of increasing dice quantity, and I just want to explain that again. We are doing this thing where we are allowing the audience to come up with the way we are going to introduce the cast members of the show so you can come up with any sort of thing that allows us to order it. Scott: [00:03:38] This town is known as Nidri. We see four individuals, oblivious to the fate destiny has laid before them.
Alex: [00:03:47] So Tychus, hanging out in Nidri, convincing various merchants of his worth as a consultant and discussing fees.
Jake: [00:03:55] So Tilly is down by the docks.
Steve (as Amos): [00:03:59] This is Gunny. She's the most hard core drinker in the whole bar.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:04:02] Nice to meet you.
Scott: [00:04:04] As each of you are going about your business, you feel the earth begin to rumble beneath your feet. Then to your shock and horror, a figure steps out of the pit.
Scott (as Herman Fourman): [00:04:13] We must run. Where, where can we be safe? He found us! He was so fast! You will be our salvation! You will be our haven! We can protect you for a time. We can shield you from his eyes. But you must never stop running. You will be our haven. (Multiple voices speak in cacophony)

Scott: [00:05:11] You guys are standing next to this crater. It's on fire. You've all been touched in the head. You saw that flash of light and then darkness. You've heard your weird voices and you each come back to reality. Oops there goes gravity. And the guy is gone.
Steve: [00:05:28] Oh dude.
Alex: [00:05:29] Wow, just got a hankering for mom's spaghetti.
Steve: [00:05:32] I just got sweaty.
Scott: [00:05:35] Hands shakin' man.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:05:39] Tychus' hands probably are shaking. 'Cause. What? What just happened?
Stephanie: [00:05:47] Right?
Steve: [00:05:47] Amos is just going to look like, “Did everybody hear that or is it just me?"
Alex (as Tychus): [00:05:54] Where. Where did that guy go?
Alex: [00:05:56] He's nowhere to be seen right.
Scott: [00:05:58] No. You can roll perception checks if you want.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:06:01] So, who are you three?
Alex: [00:06:04] What a waste. 27.
Scott: [00:06:06] You critically see he's not here. There's not even, there's not even imprints in the ground from where he was standing. There is, I mean, your perception was good enough... there is zero trace that this person, this thing, was ever even here other than this crater.
Alex: [00:06:27] This giant flaming crater that here erupted out of?
Scott: [00:06:29] Right.
Jake: [00:06:30] So Tilly is going to say to the rest of the folks around him, "So did you guys see that too or was that just me."
Steve: [00:06:40] That's what I just said.
Stephanie: [00:06:42] So when he touches us, we hear that. Do we see anything?
Scott: [00:06:49] Oh, no.
Stephanie: [00:06:51] OK.
Scott: [00:06:52] Just darkness, dark blackness.
Stephanie: [00:06:54] And then, and then when it stopped, he was gone. Right?
Scott: [00:06:57] Yeah.
Stephanie: [00:06:58] Ok. All right. Just clarifying.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:06:59] I mean I just heard a bunch of gibberish going through my head, I couldn't understand what was trying to be said.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:07:08] Where the heck did he go, or they go?
Alex (as Tychus): [00:07:11] And how did he split into four characters- four people?
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:07:13] And who is he running from?
Steve (as Amos): [00:07:15] Holy crap that's a lot of questions.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:07:17] All really good questions.
Steve (as Amos): [00:07:19] We should search around the crater, see if there's anything there.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:07:23] I agree.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:07:25] What's your guy's name? Where do you come from? What are you doing here? I'm Gunny. I'm from Flifblarfen.
Steve (as Amos): [00:07:31] Hey, uh Gilly, did you find that coffee yet?
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:07:34] It's Gunny. And no, I saw the- the comet and I came over here and I haven't had any coffee yet today and I'd really really like to try some.
Steve (as Amos): [00:07:46] I'm with you. I'm Amos.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:07:49] Cool.
Alex: [00:07:50] Can I roll an intelligence or knowledge check to understand what coffee is? Or is it commonly known? It sounds like it's not very commonly known.
Scott: [00:07:57] No it is not supposed to be common at all. This is going to be like an obscure side quest for her to find coffee.
Stephanie: [00:08:03] Gunny, she would always follow around like the outsiders from her town and listen to their stories and one of them talked about coffee and said it was unbelievable. So she's obsessed with coffee.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:08:15] Amos half elf, sir, you spoke of this coffee. What is this?
Steve (as Amos): [00:08:23] I have been around coffee once or twice, coming through on ships. It's a strange bean, from my experience, it's better processed and inhaled through the nose.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:08:37] But you told me to eat it! So, coffee- coffee is supposed to be the nectar of the gods. I've heard that it's so heavenly that it can make even the grumpiest curmudgeon into a pleasant companion. I'm really excited to try it. I think it's gonna help me make new friends. I really love making new friends. Are you guys gonna be my friends?
Steve (as Amos): [00:08:59] Oh man.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:09:02] Gunny you're a little ambitious aren't you?
Steve (as Amos): [00:09:05] Let me tell you something Gilly...
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:09:06] I'm just really excited to be here!
Steve (as Amos): [00:09:07] Listen here. This is important. You do not need coffee.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:09:12] Why not?
Jake (as Tilly): [00:09:13] Was it inside her all along?
Steve (as Amos): [00:09:14] Oh yes.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:09:15] What does that mean?
Steve (as Amos): [00:09:17] Maybe one day I'll help you find out. For right now we're stuck in this crater.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:09:20] Yeah. Let's figure out what's going on. What's your name though?
Alex: [00:09:23] Tychus mumbles underneath his breath, he's like, "Where's she from that they call sex, coffee".
Scott: [00:09:31] Roll an investigate. You guys said you're going to explore around the thing? Roll investigate check seek and uncover anything.
Steve: [00:09:37] A 5.
Stephanie: [00:09:41] Seven.
Alex: [00:09:43] Fifteen.
Jake: [00:09:44] Fumble.
Scott: [00:09:45] Wow. No, you guys you guys don't really find anything remarkable.
Steve: [00:09:50] Remember that scene in Spaceballs and the guys in the desert with the pick?
Stephanie: [00:09:52] And they're combing the desert?
Scott: [00:09:53] We ain't found shit!
Jake (as Tilly): [00:10:00] So little one I understand you're Gunny. The dwarf fellow, what is your name, sir?
Alex: [00:10:11] He kind of like lifts himself, I guess, out of the pit and extends and goes, "The name's Tychus, Tychus Gemcutter."
Jake (as Tilly): [00:10:16] It is pleasure to meet you Tychus. My name is Alnor Gladdenstone. You can call me Tilly.
Steve (as Amos): [00:10:23] Tilly? Why Tilly?
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:10:23] Tilly sounds silly.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:10:26] It was an endearing name that my family gave me as a young child.
Steve (as Amos): [00:10:31] Well that was boring.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:10:34] You don't seem like a lot of fun.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:10:35] So this was a pretty large commotion event that happened, and I wouldn't be surprised if people from the town either start making their way out here, or ask us what happened when we got out there. I'm a little hesitant to tell everyone that a man split in four and scrambled our brains until we blacked out, they might not take us very seriously from there out.
Steve (as Amos): [00:10:57] It's like every other day for me.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:10:59] Should we agree on a story as to what what occurred out here or possibly not mention what just happened.
Steve (as Amos): [00:11:06] It seems like a sound plan.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:11:08] Yep. We should. Mm hmm.
Alex: [00:11:10] Are there any black rocks or anything like that maybe around?
Scott: [00:11:13] Black isn't burnt or black is in just-.
Alex: [00:11:15] Oh yeah burnt or just kind of like some decent kind of maybe looking rocks around.
Jake: [00:11:21] Are you looking for crack?
Alex: [00:11:23] Yes.
Scott: [00:11:23] Yeah sure.
Stephanie: [00:11:23] Decent rocks.
Alex: [00:11:26] He's gonna pick up like probably like eight or ten rocks, that maybe look like they could be like polished or shined up or anything like that.
Steve (as Amos): [00:11:36] What are you gonna do with those rocks?
Alex (as Tychus): [00:11:36] We're gonna tell anyone that asks us that a small rock fell from the sky and broke into a bunch of smaller pieces and nothing else happened.
Steve (as Amos): [00:11:45] I think they could see the crater. I mean it's right there.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:11:49] Yeah. Just tell 'em, just tell em is was a falling star, just- just like- it happens sometimes right?
Alex (as Tychus): [00:11:56] Right. I imagine certain people would be willing to pay a fair amount for a piece of a falling star.
Alex: [00:12:03] Grabs a few more rocks.
Steve (as Amos): [00:12:06] Now I'm with you.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:12:07] Oh you're trying to make money.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:12:08] They do say "When you wish upon a falling star...".
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:12:11] What do they say?
Jake (as Tilly): [00:12:13] That that's that's what they say.
Steve (as Amos): [00:12:15] That's it.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:12:16] Yeah.
Steve: [00:12:16] Amos is gonna pick up a few rocks and he's gonna turn around look back into town and see... is anybody coming out? Are we headed back in there? What are the people doing?
Alex (as Tychus): [00:12:25] So are we in agreement that we will not tell anyone about what we saw?
Steve (as Amos): [00:12:30] No. I agree with you.
Stephanie: [00:12:32] And Gunny is going to put some rocks in our pocket.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:12:34] I believe once some of this commotion died down it would be in our best interest to discuss this amongst just the four of us.
Steve (as Amos): [00:12:42] Whatever you say boss.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:12:44] This makes us friends!
Scott: [00:12:46] You turn and look back at the town and you don't really see any people coming out towards you or anything. But again you're like probably a quarter mile away. So it's not like you can see the people in the town or anything like that.
Alex: [00:12:57] Tychus eyes up and downs this Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike and it's like "I've been staying at the Lighthouse Inn, but there are multiple places within the Nidi, I imagine we could meet. Anywhere you guys would like to stay?”
Steve (as Amos): [00:13:13] The lighthouse Inn? Oh man. Why would you want to go there? There's nothing good there. The Salty Bog is much much more conducive to these kind of conversations.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:13:24] I was going to camp!
Jake (as Tilly): [00:13:25] The library it was quite pleasant.
Scott: [00:13:28] You guys are gonna get along swell.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:13:33] Well we're all friends now, so yeah, we're gonna get along great.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:13:36] Yeah. So I think The Lighthouse Inn would be fine.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:13:39] I don't know if all of you to be able to get it at this point.
Steve (as Amos): [00:13:45] The Salty Bog it is, this way.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:13:47] Which one's the cheapest?
Scott: [00:13:51] The Salty Bog.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:13:52] Alright.
Scott: [00:13:53] Actually, technically camping is probably the cheapest. You guys turn away from the pit and you start to head back to the town. And then that man's voice pops up in your head and he says "He comes.”
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:14:06] Oh shit.
Scott (as Herman Fourman): [00:14:08] He comes! Run!
Scott: [00:14:09] Roll perception checks
Stephanie: [00:14:14] Gunny's already running. Aw shit.
Alex: [00:14:14] 23.
Jake: [00:14:20] 4.
Steve: [00:14:20] 7.
Stephanie: [00:14:20] 4.
Scott: [00:14:23] 23- You see it plain as day. You know everybody else has looked in towards the town, and for some reason you decide to look over your shoulder. And you look farther up the sloping hills that lead down to Nidri from the east. And there is, it's hard to explain... There is like a light coming down from the sky, illuminating a large circle of the ground. You probably estimate this is like a 60 foot radius circle and everything within that circle is brighter than it should be. The colors are way too vibrant. It looks like a picture that has been way way overly modified you know like anytime you see one of those Instagram pictures and too saturated with color. It doesn't make sense, it kind of hurts your eyes to look at this plot of land, but you do it anyway and you focus intently and you see in the very center of the circle is a lone figure walking along the road towards.
Alex: [00:15:28] Does it appear the circle is moving with him.
Scott: [00:15:33] Yes.
Alex: [00:15:35] I immediately pointed out to the others, "Hey look on that hill that doesn't doesn't seem natural,"
Scott: [00:15:43] The rest of you turn and see it. You see the big circle of overly saturated ground and colors and all that stuff, and maybe you even see like when a bird goes flying and then it gets into the cylinder of light, it becomes overly saturated. And then when it flies out the other side it returns to normal. But you maybe don't make out the man in the center.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:16:04] That's totally weird.
Steve (as Amos): [00:16:05] I don't see anything.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:16:06] Did you guys hear a voice just now?
Jake (as Tilly): [00:16:08] Yep.
Steve (as Amos): [00:16:09] Yeah. He told me to run.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:16:13] Yeah. So which direction do we run in?
Jake (as Tilly): [00:16:15] I'm thinking not towards town.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:16:17] I would say let's go into town. We can try and become difficult to find in there.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:16:23] What do you think, pirate?
Steve (as Amos): [00:16:24] I'm saying we run into town.
Scott: [00:16:27] You watch and you view this man and you judge he will probably get to town before-
Alex: [00:16:33] Does he look like he's going to town or towards us.
Scott: [00:16:36] He's going to the town.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:16:37] Yeah I think we need to go a different route.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:16:40] I agree.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:16:42] So wait where are we going?
Alex (as Tychus): [00:16:44] I believe you spoke of camping missy?
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:16:48] Yep.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:16:49] Perchance you could uh-.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:16:50] We could all share my tent.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:16:52] Maybe guide us guide us through the bog. The swamp.
Stephanie: [00:16:57] Gunny has no idea what she's doing.
Scott: [00:16:59] I was just say, as the DM asking Gunny, I'm sure you know nothing of the swamp but you’re like "Yeah we'll go through there." So you guys are going to try and flee the town through the swamp. Correct. This is what I'm hearing. Right?
Alex: [00:17:11] I say we just stay outside of town.
Stephanie: [00:17:14] Maybe just on the other side of that wall.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:17:17] I feel like if we need to avoid this, you know, there's a lot of things that just happen to us and I'm not one to take chances that whatever that light ring person is, is something that's chasing us, or wants to know what just happened to us. Let's. We should be able to stay a step ahead of them if they have this giant ring around them that we can see all the time. I also don't want to get lost in a swamp.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:17:41] I won't get you lost.
Steve (as Amos): [00:17:43] The swamp. Is not good. I'm. I'm still wanting to go into town. I think I'm going to go back to Salty Dog and try to drink this off.
Stephanie: [00:17:53] It's the Salty Bog.
Steve: [00:17:55] Bog.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:17:56] I'm just gonna do what you guys do.
Steve: [00:17:58] Amos is just gonna turn around start walking back towards the town.
Scott: [00:18:00] Make a wisdom saving throw.
Alex: [00:18:02] Amos or everyone?
Scott: [00:18:03] Anybody walking back to town.
Steve: [00:18:07] A 4.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:18:07] I don't know what I want to do.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:18:11] We all need to stick together. Tychus would probably jog after him.
Stephanie: [00:18:15] Yeah.
Alex: [00:18:17] Yeah. So that's a fumble.
Stephanie: [00:18:20] So what was I supposed to roll.
Scott: [00:18:22] Wisdom saving throw. So right above the skills is a box called "saving throws" in there you'll see one called "wisdom."
Stephanie: [00:18:27] So I got 18.
Scott: [00:18:29] OK.
Jake: [00:18:29] Tilly was not going to town.
Scott: [00:18:34] If you're not going to go towards town you don't have to rule. So Tilly stands still. The other two- three turned to walk away but only only Gunny makes any progress. Amos and Tychus, you turn and you go to walk towards town and you find you can't move your body towards town. And just in the two of you, that voice comes up and it just says:
Scott (as Herman Fourman): [00:18:56] Run! Run!
Stephanie: [00:18:57] But not in me?
Scott: [00:19:01] Not in you. You willed it off.
Steve: [00:19:03] So I try to run towards town.
Scott: [00:19:06] You can't progress towards town.
Stephanie: [00:19:10] It's like a bad dream.
Scott: [00:19:12] Like, you turned and tried to step towards town and you couldn't move. And the voice popped up and said "run.”
Steve: [00:19:18] So I'm just look towards Tychus and say:
Steve (as Amos): [00:19:21] I don't think we're going towards town.
Scott: [00:19:22] Really heavy handed DMing going on here.
Stephanie: [00:19:27] So Gunny is going to turn around and look at them and be like "Guys. What the heck? I thought we were going to town."
Alex (as Tychus): [00:19:33] I'm getting I'm getting a real bad vibe about going back into town. I don't think we should go. I can barely will myself to move towards it.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:19:42] Okay. Let's go camping.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:19:43] Follow me.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:19:47] We can roast marshmallows.
Alex: [00:19:48] Where's the next closest town?
Scott: [00:19:51] Roll a uh, would that be, I guess nature?
Stephanie: [00:19:56] History?
Alex: [00:19:57] Knowledge? I wonder. We don't have knowledge.
Scott: [00:19:59] No. They got rid. They got rid of knowledge. I don't even know what skill that would be. I don't care. Roll either history or nature.
Jake: [00:20:06] Well we could say that, do you think that in Tilly's studies in the library that he would have recognized something else about the surrounding areas.
Scott: [00:20:15] You can make your check with advantage.
Alex: [00:20:19] Fifteen.
Jake: [00:20:20] Sixteen.
Scott: [00:20:21] Gunny.
Stephanie: [00:20:23] Oh sorry.
Steve: [00:20:25] Which check was it?
Scott: [00:20:26] Either nature or history.
Stephanie: [00:20:30] I got seven.
Steve: [00:20:32] I fumbled.
Scott: [00:20:34] OK so it sounds like just Tychus and Tilly succeeded on that. There's- there's a town up the road but that's the same road that the man is on, through the swamp, you guys don't think there's any towns out that way. And then obviously if you could find a way to get on a boat and go along the sea, then than any of the towns along the coast are open to you.
Jake (as Tilly): [00:20:57] I think it's time we put on our waders and head into the swamp.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:21:01] So do we want to leave town, or do we want to stay near it and see what's going on.
Steve: [00:21:07] Are we on the Western side of town, to the South is the swamp that then leads to the sea, and to the North is just a swamp.
Scott: [00:21:12] The Northwest to swamp, the South is the border on the shore, and then to the East as the hills leading further inland. The swamp leads farther out into the peninsula.
Alex: [00:21:26] Tychus mentions the city down the road and says, "Maybe we can take a wide berth of the road and head to the next city."
Scott: [00:21:35] Everybody roll a survival skill check please.
Alex: [00:21:41] Twenty.
Jake: [00:21:42] Ten.
Stephanie: [00:21:43] Seventeen.
Steve: [00:21:43] Nineteen.
Scott: [00:21:45] Okay so that's, that's probably all of you. You guys know a little something about, you know, along your ways maybe you've had to track something or something like that, but you figure if you can get on the ocean, that that's virtually untrackable. The hardest part will be getting a boat and then getting out to sea. But once you're on sea, you're untrackable. Going through the swamp is going to be slow and maybe difficult because you know there's those swamp creatures out there. But again it would be very, very hard to track you. But if you take the road, that's the easiest route, that's the safest route, you're very unlikely to get lost, but you're also very easy to track and follow. If this man happens to decide to try and find you guys. So those, those are what you think about your options.
Steve (as Amos): [00:22:33] Listen. Crew when they tell you this, if we're being told to run, you can't run in the swamp.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:22:39] Yeah it's really hard.
Steve (as Amos): [00:22:40] We need to go towards the sea.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:22:42] But I wonder like if a self-healing man that can split into four different people couldn't outrun this guy, is the sea really going to help us all that much?
Steve (as Amos): [00:22:52] On the sea you can't be tracked and you can go where you please.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:22:55] If you know how to man a ship, I'm game.

You don't think he sees you there but he extends his hand and then the form of these, they look very weird like quasi-opaque but, dogs, appear out of his extended hand and they start running towards the crater.

Scott: [00:24:22] And Gunny's like "puppies!" So you guys are running along. I like the idea of the very gigantic 8 foot tall rock gnome carrying the super muscular- how tall is Gunny like 3'7" something?

Scott: [00:24:39] Three foot tall, but she's ripped. You know, so there's this is like super beefy, ripped but 3 foot tall gnome is being carried by this like probably over the shoulder something giant gnome and the little dwarf and the half elf are running along with them and you hear those dogs baying and barking and you look over your shoulder and you see them gaining on you. And I think the dogs will get to you before you get to the shore.

Scott: [00:26:22] These dogs, they get up close to where you are all laying down and hiding, and you get a better look at them and they are- they're white hounds, but they- they're, it's like they're phasing in and out of sight. You know, they're somewhat invisible as they move. Every down then their legs just completely disappear and wisps of glowing white come off of their flesh as they move. But otherwise they look like big beefy mastiffs. Basically. Those two stealth checks from Gunny and Tilly- Gunny your head is like peeking up way too far over the edge and you may even squeal out "puppies" and they they both turn their head and they look right at you guys and they come charging in and you know, I mean, they're- they're coming at you aggressive. What do you do?

Scott: [00:27:59] Okay. Amos you see Tychus run up and stand next to Tilly and draw a rapier and kind of get in a defensive stance. What are you doing?
Steve: [00:28:09] How far are the dogs from me?
Scott: [00:28:14] Right now they're probably about 30 feet away we'll say.
Steve: [00:28:17] 30 feet.
Stephanie: [00:28:18] Don't do it.
Steve: [00:28:21] What do you think I'm gonna do?
Stephanie: [00:28:22] I think you're going to run and abandon us!
Steve: [00:28:24] Oh no. I'm gonna take out one of my daggers and try to throw it at the dog. Even though that's kind of far away.

Steve: [00:28:37] So I have 20/60 written on my sheet.
Scott: [00:28:39] Ok so- since there- what that means is the first number, if you throw it up to that distance it's a normal attack roll. If you're between the first number and the second number you have disadvantage, which means you roll twice, take the worst. And if it's farther away than the second number, you're dagger can't reach them at all.
Steve: [00:28:57] Ok. And what I'm really trying to find out is when our hand passed through the other guy, if it's even worth trying to attack these things, or if stuff's just going to go through them.

Jake: [00:29:34] Tilly reaches into his bag and grabs a crossbow and tries to leverage a shot at one of the dogs.

So you shoot the arrow lodges in the side of this thing shoulder and it kind *injured dog sounds* but then it keeps on running, it doesn't slow down much, but you definitively know now, your weapons can at least hurt these things. Gunny you see all of that happening, what are your thoughts and actions?

Scott: [00:30:16] You're all lying straight in a line on this hill. I mean you- you were thrown down right next to Amos.

Stephanie: [00:31:48] And I'm looking at my armor class?
Scott: [00:31:50] Yes.

Scott: [00:31:51] Makes it breaks it. So that's a hit. And I'm going to deal 5 points of damage to you. And I need you to make a strength saving throw.

And then it steps back a little bit and looks at you and vanishes. It's completely invisible. The next one- it's going to charge ahead and it will run up to... Who's the one that shot it with the arrow?

Scott: [00:32:32] Tilly. It's gonna run up to Tilly and try and take a bite.

Scott: [00:32:39] Yeah.
Alex: [00:32:39] I try and sidestep by it and swing, like, my, drag my rapier down its side. Does an 18 hit?
Scott: [00:32:47] That does.
Alex: [00:32:50] 12 points of damage.

Scott: [00:32:54] Did you sneak attack? Oh damn it. I did not anticipate any of that. Okay so. And then it jumps. It misses, I got a 8 on the attack roll, so unless, unless Tilly he has terrible armor class.

Scott: [00:33:09] So it comes running up and it leaps in the air and it's- it's- it's dead on centered to chomp at you and then Tychus' rapier comes out of nowhere and stabs in the side and pushes it just enough off trajectory that it misses. Tychus it's your turn.
Alex: [00:33:25] Is it still standing there in front of me?
Scott: [00:33:27] Yes.
Alex: [00:33:27] Alright. I'll swing at it again. Does a 10 hit?
Scott: [00:33:33] It does not.
Alex: [00:33:35] That's all I will do.

Steve: [00:33:37] I'm going to use a short bow and also sneak attack to shoot at that one that's at Tychus right now.

Scott: [00:33:52] So yeah, but what'd you get?
Steve: [00:33:55] It was a 9.
Scott: [00:33:56] You don't have a modifier with your bow?

Jake: [00:34:14] Tilly will try to- cause the one's to close right? But the other one far enough away that's next to Gunny that he could shoot it.

Stephanie: [00:35:28] So she's just going to swing her warhammer around and around and around and- cause she's worried that it's going to come attack her while it's invisible.

So for anybody watching it looks like that scene where Chris Farley is screaming about the bees and Tilly's just out there just like swinging her hammer and she's like "puppies, puppies!" And she's just like swinging it everywhere but it never actually connects with anything. What do you do? You can- So I'm going to say that took your action you have a movement left, you can move anywhere you want.

So the one dog that everybody is ganging up on- it's going to try and bite Tychus probably because you just dealt it that nasty damage. It got a 8 again, but then it disappears. You know, from the- from the back down it just shimmers away and vanishes. But then out of nowhere, against Gunny, as she's running back towards her friends, that dog appears behind her and leaps, she doesn't see it, but it leaps and it lands on her back and it bites her again.

Scott: [00:36:46] I'm sorry. That deals. 7 points of damage.
Stephanie: [00:36:55] Aw shit. I got 2hit points left.
Scott: [00:36:56] Wuh oh. Tychus. Tychus you see this dog disappear and then you look up and you see Gunny running towards you and this big thing- it jumps on her back and bites her. Oh I'm sorry, I forgot- Tilly make a strength check a strength, a strength save.

No. And then so because you're new to the game, I'll go ahead and let you know, if you tried to move away right now, this creature would get a free attack against you. The only way to avoid that would have been to use your action to disengage and then step away. So, it's up to you. Now what you can do is circle around it, and I suggest doing that so that way if your friends want to shoot it, you won't be providing cover to the creature anymore.

Scott: [00:42:30] The other one- Yeah, Gunny yells out "it's leaving." But the other one that was just attacked by Tilly, it's invisible and it's going to try and bite you.

Scott: [00:42:41] With no, Tilly. And I have a 20 on that attack roll, which I assume hits.
Jake: [00:42:46] Yeah.

Scott: [00:43:22] And it bit you on your arm. And even though you're like 8 feet tall and probably like 4x this thing's weight or something, I don't know how heavy mastiffs are. It wrestles you to the ground and you're prone on the ground.

Alex: [00:43:37] I'll kind of shift around to a position where he's definitely not getting cover from the prone Tilly.

And blood is just oozing out of this thing, completely covering Tilly. And it's dead or dying.

Scott: [00:44:44] So you say, you know, "Everybody hurry up, we need to get out of here," and then you come over with a dagger and you start giving this thing like a field shit, what are they called?
Stephanie: [00:44:52] Autopsy.
Scott: [00:44:54] Autopsy like a field- No not really. You look at it and it's got, it's got way too many teeth, its mouth is wider than normal. There's a lot more muscle around the jar than a normal mastiff. Way too many teeth, they're oversized. And then even dead, it's still kind of phasing in and out of sight and there's wisps of of like smoky white something coming off of it that fade away and it's still kind of hard to look at. This is, this is definitely not a normal dog.
Alex: [00:45:25] Yeah I definitely say that like "This is no normal creature, we need to leave."
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:45:30] Puppy.
Steve: [00:45:31] I'm gonna run over and pick up the dagger I threw and then say, "We have to go," and take off down the beach.
Alex: [00:45:38] I'd like to pick up the bag of gold it drops, right? That's how these things work?
Scott: [00:45:42] Yeah. No. Yeah. When you cut it open, actually, to do your autopsy... There was, there was a bag of gold and a little note that for some reason says "Congratulations you get 100 XP." That's weird.
Alex: [00:45:56] Yeah.
Steve: [00:45:57] Wow. That's the best.
Scott: [00:45:59] Yeah. And then you decide to go running off.
Alex: [00:46:02] Yes.
Scott: [00:46:03] So you guys are heading towards town at all haste and eventually, I'll say right on the very edge of the docks, the first bit of docks you get to, you see a couple ships. So there is a rowboat, which is going to be very easy to capture and get out of here. And then there's a, a bigger kind of sailing ship that might be able to weather the waters more, but it's going to require a crew. And it'll be a little harder to untie from the docks.
Steve: [00:46:39] It's just two.
Stephanie: [00:46:41] You said there were three boats?
Scott: [00:46:41] Yeah I'm gonna pause right now because I want to turn to the boat page in the Monster Manual.
Stephanie: [00:46:45] Oh. There are boat monsters?
Scott: [00:46:46] I meant Dungeons Master's Guide.
Alex: [00:46:50] Biggest mimic ever.
Scott: [00:46:52] Yeah, you get on the boat and it starts humming.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:46:56] Amos How many people do we need to crew a boat like that?
Steve: [00:47:01] I'm about to find out as soon as I know what the third boat is.
Scott: [00:47:04] Okay so there's, there's the rowboat that a crew of 1can work. There's the, jeez, there's the sailing ship which, I'm gonna- I didn't know this when, oh a crew of 10. It's a smaller one but it needs, it needs a crew of 10. You might be able to limp it along on a smaller crew but to function ideally it needs more. And then there's like a little larger than average keel boat that needs a crew of 3.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:47:36] Oooh.
Steve: [00:47:36] Hmm. A keel boat.
Stephanie: [00:47:39] What's a keel boat?
Alex: [00:47:41] Do any of them already have like a crew and group with them?
Scott: [00:47:46] No. For some reason the docks are completely... there's nobody here.
Steve (as Amos): [00:47:52] Oh shit let's just take that keel boat it only needs 3.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:47:55] Yeah! Let's take it. It's perfect.
Scott: [00:47:56] But it will take time, it will take time to, you know, prep it for voyage.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:48:02] All right. Let's do it.
Scott: [00:48:03] You guys take the time?
Steve: [00:48:04] Listen. How much time?
Scott: [00:48:07] Ten minutes.
Stephanie: [00:48:09] Can we just, I mean, can we just grab it and then sail it over to the next town and then get supplies there and then be on our merry way? And that way we get out of town faster? Instead of having to wait to prep it?
Scott: [00:48:19] Because like, so a rowboat, you can run up and just jump in and grab a oar and start paddling and you're gone. A keel boat, it's like if you pictured a riverboat with a single mast, you know. So you gotta untie it, you gotta get in there, you got to hoist the sail and do all the trimming and all that stuff. So it's gonna take a little bit more time. And then that sailboat, I think we all already know it's, straight up, there's no way it's gonna work. That takes too much of a crew.
Steve: [00:48:48] How long would it take to just untie the sailboat?
Stephanie: [00:48:51] Yeah and just like push it out.
Scott: [00:48:53] To just untie? I mean a couple minutes.
Steve: [00:48:56] The big one.
Scott: [00:48:56] Oh the big sailboat?
Steve: [00:48:58] Mm hmm.
Scott: [00:48:58] To untie that thing? It's probably tied down with... I'm gonna say 8 lines? I actually, I don't know anything about sailing. But I’ll say 8 lines. So you have to run and undo all those and cast them away.
Jake: [00:49:10] Tilly is actively undoing the keel boat right now.
Scott: [00:49:14] Okay.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:49:16] Let's go!
Steve (as Amos): [00:49:16] I have to get on it first and prep that little boat.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:49:19] Amos, can you, can you pilot this thing?
Steve (as Amos): [00:49:21] I can. I can, I can tell you- tell you what to do.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:49:26] All right. What do we need to do to get it going?
Steve: [00:49:28] So. You know. Steve doesn't actually know.
Jake: [00:49:35] You didn't do your research or what?
Alex: [00:49:37] You do boating tasks 1 through 4 and...
Steve (as Amos): [00:49:40] I'll say, "Look, I'm gonna get on and start to prep the boat. Two of you need to make sure, you know, we're not watched. Create a distraction if people come around.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:49:52] I'll keep people away.
Scott: [00:49:53] Okay. Roll a perception- keeping people away. Everyone else I'm going to say roll, I don't know, a dexterity check? Amos, do you have- you're a sailor they had to have given you proficiency in sea vehicles or something right?
Steve: [00:50:08] I have water vehicles. Yes.
Scott: [00:50:11] Yeah that's the one so you can make your check with advantage because you like you know your shit. You know what you're doing. So first off with that perception check, what'd you get?
Alex: [00:50:20] 27.
Scott: [00:50:22] So you're standing there and you, you don't see anyone out on the docks and you start to get a little curious about it. So you wander away and you get to a point where you can look down, there's a alley that everything aligns just right. And you can see part of the town center and everybody is gathered in the town center.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:50:41] That's a relief. We can get out. Yeah.
Scott: [00:50:46] The rest of you, what did you get on your dexterity checks?
Stephanie: [00:50:50] 18.
Steve: [00:50:51] 21.
Jake: [00:50:51] 20.
Scott: [00:50:53] Jesus dudes, nailed it off in the perfect time. So even, so when I gave you my time estimates it was for all 4 of you working, but even with 3 of you working, you guys still managed to get this thing untied, pulled away from the dock, and the sail up and in a little less than 10 minutes.
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:51:10] *singing* Yo ho yo ho.
Scott: [00:51:14] As you sail away, what do you guys do on the boat?
Jake (as Tilly): [00:51:19] *singing* Sailing...
Stephanie (as Gunny): [00:51:20] *singing* Take me away.
Alex (as Tychus): [00:51:22] *singing* Come sail away, come sail away! Sail away with me!
Stephanie: [00:51:23] How many boat songs can we think of?
Scott: [00:51:33] I hate you all.
*Ending Theme begins - slow, dramatic piano*
Scott: [00:51:33] You are all on the boat and you have started sailing away off into the sunset and after a time you look back at the town. And you see the light. This, this cylinder of light that has been down on the town, right on the town square where you last saw all the people gathered and it starts to grow. It expands larger and larger. Until it encompasses the entire town. And it continues to grow. It encompasses the docks. It stretches all the way out to the wall along the border to the swamp. And then it gets brighter and brighter. After a time, you can barely look at it. It burns your retinas to look at this light covering the entire town. And then there is simply a flash. There's no sound. There are no screams. There's no noise, there's nothing. And when your vision recovers...Nidri is gone.
