Scott: Hello and welcome to Shocking Gasp: A D&D podcast. I'm Scott the Dungeon Master. And today we'll be introducing the cast using a suggestion sent in by Twitter user @RevDeschain. Rev asked us to order ourselves based on total podcast subscriptions. Well guys, which of you is subscribed to the fewest podcasts?
Alex: Yeah, that would be probably me. Currently, I only actively listen to one podcast. It's The Giant Bombcast if you like video games, it's good stuff. I will be playing Tychus Gemcutter as well.
Steve: What am I, number two? Hi, this is Steve. I am subscribed to only one podcast. It is Radiolab, which is fantastic and I'm playing Amos Vonal.
Stephanie: This is Stephanie. I play Gunda Glitterblaster and I like to listen to the Lore podcast by Aaron Mahnke as well as Getting Curious with JVN.
Jake: Hola this is Jake. I am subscribed to 12 podcasts. Currently kind of in a McElroy brothers theme. So I'm actively listening to old episodes of MBMBAM and I listen to Adventure Zone every time they release one and I will be playing Tilly "Terrified" Gladdenstone after our last podcast.
Scott (creepily): Good, good. And for anyone who's interested Scott the Dungeon Master is subscribed to ten podcasts. They are all actual play podcasts because I'm a full blown nerd like that. One of my current favorites is called The Critshow. They do Monster of the Week and interestingly enough their keeper, or what we would call a dungeon master is the same Rev that gave us our Shocking Order today. And then the other thing I want to do is, I think I said in a previous episode we had to re-record episode 1 and it kind of got confusing, between so- like Alex's character has an accent in episode 1 and then he doesn't have one in episode 2 and then he does, because we technically recorded episode 2 before 1 due to some data loss. The point is somewhere in all that confusion, I think I may have lost the point where you guys all described what your characters look like. So let's take a moment to say what these characters actually look like and we'll go in the same order we introduced ourselves.
Alex: So Tychus, he is a dwarf. He's got almost like a high and tight short cut hair. That is black. He also for facial hair, he's got like, his goatee and his mustache are pretty long and braided but like along his cheeks and the rest of it, it's pretty clean cut. I guess being a couple days out doing crazy stuff, you might start to see a noticeable five o'clock shadow running along there. He's wearing pretty nice clothes with basically some leather armor like a jerkin and stuff over that. He's probably like he's like 4' 10". Probably noticeably like, not skinnier, but he's not big blocky dwarf that you probably like initially would think of when you think of a dwarf. He's pretty like light on his feet and doesn't seem to be having like an overall like powerful build or anything like that. Every once in a while, you might see him like put on a small pair of reading glasses as he's looking at papers.
Steve: Amos Vonal: he is a 5'11" half-elf. He is a sailor. Although a lot of times it gets called pirate. He's gotta here's a really good description: a typical pirate look so he his hair is blonde, obviously. It's you know, sun-bleached from being out in the sun. It's a little longer than shoulder length. He's got he's got some of those thick dreadlock type looking things in his hair, but it doesn't quite look they were like they were put there on purpose. He's got a little scar on his right cheek. He actually has a little bit pale skin for a guy who's out in the- on the water and in the sun so much. He's 28 years old, but his skin is kind of creased and warn, you know just mostly looks like not from being in battle or fights or anything, but just from being tired from drinking too much. Wears a pretty flowing cotton shirt tucked into brown pants, boots, tricorne pirate hat. And his eyes, his eyes are grey and that's Amos.
Stephanie: So Gunda Glitterblaster AKA Gunny is a 3 foot tall gnome. She's 25 years old. She has tan skin, green eyes. She's got a big nose and then her hair is like lavender and it sticks up all funny. It's kind of wild and crazy and she puts like little beads and clips in there to try and tame it but it doesn't really work. And that's- I don't know what she's wearing... A green jumpsuit. That's what- for some reason I'm picturing a green jumpsuit.
Jake: Like a unitard or...
Steve: That's good.
Stephanie: Like a... Like, you know how when Kim Kardashian is trying to be all fashionable and she'll wear something weird? An army green leotard that maybe Kim Kardashian would wear, but it's a jumpsuit, it looks like a mechanic would wear it. That's what I'm picturing.
Jake: Okay, does it have like a name on it? That just says Gunda like a patch.
Jake: That's really cool.
Steve: So when I pictured the green jumpsuit it was neon green.
Stephanie: No, army green.
Steve: Okay, army green.
Jake: Nice. So as Tilly I kind of have to break the veil a little bit and part the curtain. So when we did our interview, I did a really poor job describing Tilly because I was not prepared.
Stephanie: No shit.
Scott: So bad. It was so bad.
Jake: So what I did was I wrote a couple things on the character sheet about what he looked like. And then Scott wanted more details, so I opened up The Player's Handbook and I literally read the first sentence of gnome and it confused it because I said he had brown hair and then I said he had flaxen hair and I didn't know what flaxen meant so I thought it was the same thing.
Stephanie: Not brown!
Scott: Not brown. Heads up it's not brown.
Jake: No. So, and I also had some proportion questions that I wasn't very good at describing. So basically Tilly is a gnome but he doesn't look like a normal gnome because he's 7 foot tall, over 7 feet, almost 8 feet tall. He has fair skin, green eyes, brown hair, not flaxen hair. He is tall and skinny. He still has a big nose like a typical gnome would but he's just he's kind of stretched out so he could be misportrayed as a human because he's 7 foot 10. I think-
Stephanie: How many humans do you know, there are 7'10".
Jake: I think 5, so otherwise he was from a fairly noble family. So he just has commoner’s clothes, but they're nice. Like they're pressed and clean and he doesn't carry any weapons on him. Everything's in his sack that he carries so. He's- that's, that's kind of it though.

Scott: When gunny says that "that guy touched our heads" you all just like a very brief but sharp pain goes through all your foreheads right behind right behind your eyes. You see the outline of a lizard folk standing over Vantajar. You assume it is feasting on the blood and organs within the small halfling. There stands Vantajar and the first thing everybody's eyes go to is that his bowels have spilt open from the tears the lizard folk left and its abdomen.
Steve: You did it because I loved him didn't you?
Scott: You turn around and Fourman is standing directly behind you and she looks into your eyes and says "You must always stick together" and then he picks you up and throws you into the water. These nightmares occur over and over and over again for each of you for what feels like a thousand years and more. Tychus, you are consumed by mastiffs. You are painfully aware of every moment. Tilly, you cannot get the help of your friends as they look at you and your embarrassment and then you cause the death of scores of infant babies. Amos, your teeth come out and turn into spiders and consume you again and again. And Gunny, that snake always pops out of your mouth and always bites you in the face and kills you and after this- after this time, after what feels like a thousand years and more, eventually your minds snap from the strain and you can't take it anymore and everything fades to black.

Scott: And then you open your eyes and you're sitting on the keelboat. You all come fully awake and you stand up and you look around and you realize it's still dusk. And Vantajar is in his chamber, but you are all apparently lying on the deck of the boat. And as you look around you see that carved into the deck, carved into your armor, carved into anything within reach that you could have carved with your fingers... There are runes. They appear to be a language that none of you can read and surrounding all these runes are X's.
Jake: First thing Tilly does is he looks at his fingernails to see if they're worn like to the nub or like tries to understand what made those runes and the X's.
Scott: You guys probably, instead of damaging your hands, you probably pulled out whatever sharp object you had available and used that to carve stuff. So the idea is that you guys were in some sort of state when this was happening and while it was going on, your bodies in the real world were still carving stuff.
Jake: Did we take actual damage?
Alex: I'm gonna go see if Vantajar is in there and if he has had his guts eaten out by a shadow monster or not.
Alex: Because I don't really know when this nightmare started versus what was actually going on.
Scott: That's fair. You go running in to check on Vantajar, he is fine. He's breathing. He's still unconscious. He's still in critical condition. He was still stabbed. So as far as you know, everything up until raiding the lizard folk temple still happened. The rest of you, when you look yourselves over you're not- you're not anymore wounded than you were when we left the swamp.
Stephanie: Gunny is going to stick her tongue out make sure it's not a snake anymore.
Scott: A small wet pink tongue sticks out from your mouth.
Stephanie: Oh good.
Steve: Oh, thanks for the description. Yeah Amos obviously is checking on his teeth, just sticking a finger in his mouth and pushing on him a little bit.
Scott: Several spiders come out, but everything else is ok.
Jake: Which is normal, let's be honest.
Alex: Anything under 4 spiders: totally normal.
Stephanie: Gunny's gonna look at him and tell him he needs to brush its teeth.
Steve: Do we- his teeth are pristine. Did we get any actual-
Scott: That's cannon.
Steve: Any actual healing?
Steve: While we were resting.
Stephanie: Yeah, were we resting?
Scott: No that does not count as a short rest. Nice try.
Steve: I had to try it!
Jake: So, Tilly's gonna get his notebook and start drawing these runes down.
Jake: And capturing them.
Steve: Why? They're everywhere.
Stephanie: Hah, yeah. They're literally carved in the wood, they're going anywhere.
Steve: So we've carved the runes into the boat?
Scott: As far as you can tell, yeah.
Steve (as Amos): I- Amos is... is disoriented. "Looks like we were pretty busy during... our... nightmare?"
Stephanie (as Gunny) I don't even remember falling asleep.
Steve: He's going to look and see if we can see any of that kind of look like his handwriting or would come from his dagger.
Stephanie: Are they all pretty much the same?
Scott: Roll an investigate.
Stephani: Like are all the runes the same or they're like is it like repetitive?
Scott: It's- you can't tell because it's not a language you can read so you see a lot of symbols are repeated. But since you don't know what order any of the stuff is, it's hard for you to tell but it looks like you guys were writing various phrases on the ground and then surrounding that by those X's.
Stephanie: Is it kind of like everywhere, chaotic like in Doctor Who?
Scott: Yeah, like if you if you picture the trope where like the guy goes insane and then scrawls stuff all over inside his room. It kind of looks like that but instead of being all over the boat, it's just surrounding where you guys were lying down. Okay what you get on the investigation check Amos?
Scott: 18? So you're looking at it and as you're looking around and you look at everybody's the reach of their arm and everything and you know, you're recalling where everybody was positioned when you first woke up. It looks like each person was unconscious and their arm, whichever their main arm is, the reach of the writing is only equal to the reach of that arm.
Stephanie: So like snow angels.
Scott: Yeah kind of. And with that 18, you sort of deduce that your arm was the only thing moving and it was moving on its own.
Alex: And none of us recognize the writing like anything like that? In terms of like what it- you said it's a language we don't understand or like symbols we don't understand?
Scott: If it's a language, none of you recognize it.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Do you think this has anything to do with Herman?
Alex (as Tychus): I think everything bad that's happened to us recently has to do with that Herman Fourman character.
Jake (as Tilly): You mean the man who touched us?
Stephanie (as Gunny): Ow!
Alex (as Tychus): Aah!
Scott: And then it all happens again. Intestines shoot out from the cabin.
Jake: So I did that intentionally. Do we have a headache?
Scott: Quit playing with fire? Yeah, when you bring it up, you do feel a slight pressure behind your eyes, but it's not nearly as bad as it was before.
Jake (as Tilly): Okay. "Sorry about that. I just had to check."
Steve (as Amos): Amos, he's gonna say, "I can see each one of us did these markings, let's look around and compare and see if they're the same.
Scott: If only you had some kind of nerd that was way into research.
Jake: Yeah. I was already doing that.
Steve: I don't know if- I mean, we just see you drawing doodles in your book.
Jake: Yeah, it actually isn't the runes. I'm just doing like a new Calvin and Hobbes.
Stephanie: Schmalvin and Schmobbes.
Jake: Yeah, Calvin and Cobbes.
Scott: Calvin and Hobgoblins.
Jake: Yeah, there you go. Yeah. So when I look at- compare each person's carvings, is it a similar language?
Scott: Essentially what you do is yeah, you realize that it's all the same language and there's definitely very thematic elements to what everybody carved and I'm just going to go ahead and say through your notebook over the next three days of the journey you're going to come out here and continue to work and you are systematically writing down any of the unique passages. If it's a repeated passage, you're not going to write it down again. You'll just notate maybe who wrote it down.
Stephanie: How much of what happened to us, actually happened? We came back on the boat. We talked about Herman. How much- like obviously from the point, I guess that *slurping noise* happened?
Jake (as Tilly): I think, I think it was when we brought him up the first time. I think that that was the beginning. And those headaches- I think that he had to have something to do with it.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Do you think he caused that?
Jake (as Tilly): I have no other reason to believe that she didn't cause that.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Or he or she.
Steve: Is the boat sailing. I mean...
Stephanie: Yeah, are we on our way?
Scott: Yeah. So you guys, you strain your memories and you try and piece together what happened, and as near as you can tell, you guys got on the boat and you put Vantajar in his room and then you all walked out onto the deck and you started having that discussion you happened and so something somewhere in the stretch of that discussion is when the change happened. But, my point is then, you guys were, you basically just got done setting Vantajar and you were discussing about what to do next. So you guys really haven't trimmed the sail or anything of got it moving. So it's kind of maybe a drift but it's not it's not really going full tilt.
Stephanie: I guess we should probably set sail and then regroup and discuss what happened.
Jake (as Tilly): Amos, you said you were captain of sorts. Can you get us going?
Steve (as Amos): I wouldn't say I'm a captain. But yeah, I mean we've already- we've already sailed this far so let's get the ship underway and then we can compare. I mean, I know I had some kind of nightmare with my teeth falling out of my face and Vantajar rising from the dead and we need to talk about all that.
Jake (as Tilly): Agreed. What can I do?
Steve: 'm gonna tell him to do some stuff and we're going to get the boat moving.
Stephanie: Do some stuff Tilly!
Scott: Go do some boat things.
Jake: Go team!
Alex: Execute boat steps 1-4.
Scott: Initiate boat sailing...
Jake (as Tilly): He looks through his notebook and counts off the steps, 1, 2, 3 & 4 that he supposed to do.
Alex: We begin putting the boat in the water.
Steve (as Amos): Raise the main sail move the hobbits??, you know, that kind of stuff
Jake (in mid-Atlantic accent): Hoist the mizzenmast!
Steve: There's no mizzenmast on a keelboat! Oh sorry.
Stephanie: Is there a crow's nest?
Alex (as Tychus): Which one of y'all is gonna swab that poop deck?
Steve: Probably not a crow's nest but they would be nice.
Scott: I'm not going to require any checks for the boat. I'm not- we don't need to get that far into it. You guys get the boat in motion. It's sailing.
Stephanie: All right, let's talk.
Steve: Okay. We're on our way. And Vantajar's all good and everything right? I mean, well, he's not all good, but...
Stephanie (as Gunny): So Fourman Herman whatever seem like they needed our help. So it would be went in their best interest to protect us. Yes? So, why would they put us through that?
Steve (as Amos): How do you know it was them? I mean, we were also chased by ghost dogs.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Well, we just talked about it and you guys had no reason to believe that they didn't do that. Or Tilly didn't at least. The previous conversation? Tilly said "I have no reason to believe that they wouldn't have done that?"
Scott: What Jake meant to say was, is...
Jake (as Tilly): No. No, I do believe that whatever he did to us she did intentionally. For what purpose, I don't know why but that's- we all experienced a headache when we talked about the event that brought us together, so I have no other reason to believe that it wasn't caused by her.
Steve (as Amos): Was it right after we were talking about the event and Fourman- when we got the headache and then potentially went into whatever it was?
Jake (as Tilly): Some fugue state.
Steve (as Amos): Hmm.
Jake (as Tilly): And I don't know what this being wants with us.
Stephanie (as Gunny): We all dreamed the same thing, right? It was like a collective dream.
Steve (as Amos): What did you see? How did it end?
Stephanie (as Gunny): We fought a zombie Vantajar, we all ended up in the water?
Tilly & Amos in unison: Yeah.
Stephanie (as Gunny): In some weird cavern.
Jake (as Tilly): Yeah.
Stephanie (as Gunny): We were back in Nidri and then the nightmare started happening.
Jake (as Tilly): Well, I had warts and you all couldn't reach me and it was the most shameful thing I've ever experienced. But you just stood there, you wanted to help but you couldn't help.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I never saw that, but my own tongue was a snake and attacked me over and over and over again. I died over and over and over again.
Alex (as Tychus): I got torn to bits by a pack of dogs over and over and over again.
Steve (as Amos): Yeah, it seemed like I was in eternity with my teeth falling out and turning into spiders and it was it was horrifying.
Stephanie (as Gunny): And the whole time our bodies were doing that weird stuff.
Steve: What does it mean?!
Alex (as Tychus): So I don't know about you guys, but in my dream we were fighting that undead Vantajar, asshole.
Jake (as Tilly): Yeah.
Alex (as Tychus): I didn't get stuck in this loop of torment and pain until that Hermon, you know, pulled me into the water.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I never even saw Herman.
Jake (as Tilly): Wait, you saw him? Her?
Alex (as Tychus): Yeah. I was still up on the boat, you know, Tilly and Gunny, you guys went in the water and Herman told me we had to stick together, drug me underwater, and tortured me for what felt like a thousand years.
Stephanie (as Gunny): So was that a lesson in staying together? What?
Jake (as Tilly): But why would we experience our own nightmares? If we were supposed to be together.
Steve (as Amos): We were being punished for separating?
Stephanie (as Gunny): We never separated, not in real life.
Steve (as Amos): Not on purpose.
Jake (as Tilly): Have any of you had any of this type of experience before?
Alex (as Tychus):No.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Nope.
Steve (as Amos): No, not until we were all standing around that crater.
Scott: No, I'm just fucking with you. I wanted to say something.
Stephanie: You've gone too long without speaking.
Scott: I know. It's weird. As the DM I just sit here now.
Alex (as Tychus): It's painfully obvious that none of us know what's going on right now.
Steve (as Amos): We have no idea.
Alex (as Tychus): All we know is that something- it has to be something powerful- powerful strong magic, or something or other. I wonder if these runes our best bet at trying to tie it back to something, you know. Maybe Bookworm over there can do some research?
Stephanie (as Gunny): Maybe in the next town we can find a library that might give us some reference for what these things are?
Jake (as Tilly): We- we have. We have some unknown questions that we need to find answers to and I do believe you're correct. We need to get to the town. We need to study. There's something about us that connects us and whether it was this event or something prior to the event.... We need to find it out.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Do you think there's like a scholar or a priest or somebody with a lot of knowledge might be able to help us with this in the next town? Would that be worth a shot?
Jake (as Tilly): Anything is better than what we have today.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Which is jack shit?
Alex: Jack and shit.
Jake (as Tilly): Other than and yes.
Steve (as Amos): There might be something but the chances are walking into a town and saying hey, we all went into a trance and had a shared nightmare together and carved a bunch of things on a boat.
Stephanie (as Gunny): We don't have to tell him that we could just say we found some runes.
Steve (as Amos): I think we have to find out why we're now attached. I mean, I don't know you and yet here. We're somehow joined now.
Stephanie (as Gunny): That's true. We don't really know each other.
Jake (as Tilly): Well, my name is Tilly.
Stephanie (as Gunny): All right. Hi Tilly?
Stephanie: I think we've introduced each other before.
Jake (as Tilly): I threw you.
Stephanie (as Gunny): You did!
Jake (as Tilly): I think I know you very well.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Well, I wouldn't say that but...
Alex (as Tychus): Well we got what? Like another two days till we get to the city. Yeah, we can backtrack.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Tell us about yourself.
Alex (as Tychus): Yeah.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Where are you from Tilly?
Jake (as Tilly): I'm from Korant. It's on an unknown country that our DM has yet to tell us about...
Stephanie: I don't know where I'm from!
Jake (as Tilly): But it's a small town...
Scott: Throwing me right under the bus.
Jake (as Tilly): I am part of the Gladdenstone family. I don't know if you've heard of us, but fairly well renowned. My great-great-great-great-great grandmothers she found the cure for the Scarlet and Gray fever. I don't know if you've heard of that but it was a disease that caused mental dullness, extreme suggestibility, and this passion for barbaric sports that ravaged city after city. And after that she found that cure and our family was put on the map for that. So...
Stephanie: Does case even have a football team?
Jake: They do, they do, they went undefeated again the Buckeyes in 1902. Our most well-known moments.
Jake (as Tilly): But that that's you know, I obviously I'm a tall gnome and I don't know why. So that's why I'm traveling...
Stephanie (as Gunny): So you want to find out why you're tall?
Jake (as Tilly): Yeah, and I don't know if you saw in the dream or not, but I have a couple abilities that I should not have access to and I don't understand those either.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Hmmm.
Jake: And then I like shrink myself.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Wow.
Alex: He immediately returns to regular size.
Jake (as small Tilly with a high pitched voice): Yeah so this, I can do this s a couple times but that's about (voice returns to deep pitch) and then I turned big again. So it's kind of funny. But yes, that's me.
Stephanie (as Gunny): That's a cool trick.
Jake (as Tilly): Oh thanks.
Scott (imitating Gob Bluth): That's no trick. That's an illusion.
Jake: It's magic.
Jake (as Tilly): So Gunny you seem quite exuberant, can- tell us your story?
Stephanie (as Gunny): Well, I'm from Flifblarfen- and um, I never knew my parents. I just kind of grew up with the help of others and I have really great place where I'm from and there's lots of nice people there and there's always lots of people passing through and I would always talk to them and learn about their travels and it always made me want to travel and see what there is to see in the world and I also have a really cool job where I'm in gem inspector and my instructor? Is that what he would be called? Why would he be called?
Stephanie (as Gunny): My mentor. There we go- His name his name is Glim Schmermendicer, and he's just been the best. He's been like a father figure to me and he really encouraged me to go out and see the world. And so here I am and I'm trying to find adventure and I can't wait to go back to Flifblarfen one day and share my stories with everybody that I meet. And that's me. How about you Amos?
Steve (as Amos): This is me right now on this boat. I'm from Port Thraxis, which is about as far away from here as you can get. Nothing wrong with it, I just travel around on ships. I don't know, I mean, had a good mom good life. I like to hang out on the docks. Kind of a drinker, wanderer. I's like to have a ship and a crew which I guess we have here now, and I wish we had some rum. Fuck. Yeah. Other than that, I guess I'm not very not a very complicated person. I do- this is it- this is what I like to do right here. Now.
Jake (as Tilly): You like to be abducted by some other-worldly being that...
Steve (as Amos): Oh yeah.
Jake (as Tilly): ...bonds us together
Steve (as Amos): All the time. Usually after a bottle of rum. That just happens, you know... In my head.
Jake (as Tilly): Yeah that's true.
Steve (as Amos): NO! Being out on the water, on the ship.
Jake (as Tilly): Oh! Oh.
Steve (as Amos): Just experiencing the ocean of freedom. That's what I like.
Stephanie (as Gunny): That sounds nice. I kind of like the ocean, I've never been on it before, this is kind of nice.
Jake (as Tilly): So do you drink- what's your favorite kind of rum? Would you say the Brewkegger brand is a good rum? Or is that uh-
Steve (as Amos): Uh, I would say the y'know, the Copper Coin brand? *nervous laughter*
Stephanie: I don't get any of that.
Jake (as Tilly): Ah, yes Copper Coin. Yes. It's a good brand.
Steve (as Amos): Oh, yeah goes down easy.
Jake (as Tilly): Yeah. I think that's actually their motto: Copper Coin: Goes down easy like a copper coin. It's a little clunky but you know, it's effective.
Alex (as Tychus): Not the worst I've ever heard.
Jake (as Tilly): Yeah, you remember it.
Stephanie: Yeah, that doesn't- that doesn't sound good.
Steve (as Amos): Yeah, Copper Coin brand rum, you know, it's good.
Alex (as Tychus): Made with real copper.
Stephanie: Are you a cop?
Alex (in Boston accent): Are you a cop? You gotta tell me if you're a cop.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Go ahead Tychus, tell us about yourself.
Alex (as Tychus): Yeah, so the name's Tychus as you guys have figured out obviously at this point. I'm kind of a personal assistant/squire to a Lord Tordek Fireforge and I was outing in Nidri, you know kind of evaluating shipping lanes and trade routes and things like that just- he sends me out on random assignments to get information for my bring it back. So that's why I was in Nidri. I've kind of been on the road for the last couple years of my life.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Is he going to be like that for you?
Alex (as Tychus): If he needs to get a hold of me for some reason, you know, I'm sure that he'll find a way to do so. He's a man of many resources, so I can go months at a time without seeing him. But whenever he needs to get a message to me it gets through. So.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Wow.
Steve (as Amos): I'm trying to find what we have in common. Y'know, our stories are all interesting.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Why did we all end up in Nidri?
Stephanie: Sorry. Go ahead. I didn't mean to interrupt.
Steve (as Amos): Same thing as I always do, there's no purpose, I just happened to be in Nidri, I happened to be in a bar, you happened to be in a bar, looking to drink coffee, you put down a mean dragon ale. So we have that in common.
Jake: WOOOO HOT DRAGON ALE!
Steve (as Amos): Uh, other than that- I don't see, other than we all ran to help when we saw the danger- whatever it was coming out of the sky.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Maybe that was it.
Steve (as Amos): Maybe that's it. We ran towards it...
Stephanie (as Gunny): Instead of away
Steve (as Amos): And we make kind of a good team so far. We saved Vantajar, right?
Steve (as Amos): I don't know.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Hmm.
Alex (as Tychus): Yeah. I was going to say the only thing we had in common was that we all seem to be on the road. But I like your point more. We were the first for that crater. And that that seems to be the most likely thing to link is at this point.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Why did you guys run to the crater? What made you go over there?
Jake (as Tilly): There is nothing like a good mystery. So I had to understand from a- there were no stars that were supposed to be passing or any comets or meteors. So it you have to figure out what it is, right?
Steve (as Amos): Honestly. It was something to do. Curious about it. Adventure. Gunny, you were going then I was kind of, at the time, trying to get away from Vantajar.
Jake (as Tilly): That didn't work out well.
Steve (as Amos): No.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I hope he's gonna be okay.
Steve (as Amos): Oh the little guy'll be alright.
Alex (as Tychus): You got all his blood back in and he's fine.
Steve (as Amos): Yeah. I don't know about you, but I did not know what I was doing.
Stephanie: Are you guys like still covered in blood?
Scott: Probably. You're probably all still covered in blood.
Steve (as Amos): I'm no doctor.
Stephanie (as Gunny): So what's our game plan when we get to Nedrill?
Jake (as Tilly): That's a great question. We can't tell anybody about what we saw right?
Stephanie (as Gunny): No, nope.
Steve (as Amos): Not specifically.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I'm sure we can show them the runes but we shouldn't say how we came upon them.
Jake (as Tilly): What about Nidri?
Alex (as Tychus): So we all saw Nidri is just got now. I feel like people are going to be asking questions about that when news starts to travel about Nidri disappearing and I don't know we want to be known as the people that were last at Nidri.
Stephanie (as Gunny): But Vantajar didn't remember Nidri.
Jake (as Tilly): Precisely.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Do you think it was just the lack of oxygen in the trunk?
Alex (as Tychus): He just didn't remember a disappearing, I thought.
Jake (as Tilly): No he was unaware of its existence.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I guess we can ask people and we get to Nedrill if they know how to get to Nidri and if they look at us funny, then we know.
Scott: Tychus roll a wisdom check. Amos roll an intelligence check.
Jake: Who's that voice? Who just said that?
Alex: Was that- was that Herman Fourman?
Jake: Was that Herman Fourman?
Alex: I got an 11 on my wisdom check.
Steve: I've gotta 12 on intelligence.
Scott: So both of you at almost the same moment- Tychus you remember you have them and Amos you think to check them. And so the idea is if you're trying to find out if everybody everywhere forgot Nidri and so you think well what if we check the ship's registration papers.
Alex (as Tychus): And we can check see if it still says Nidri on the side of the ship.
Steve (as Amos): Nidri's Pride. Right?
Scott: Right. So Tychus has the papers and you never actually looked at him before so he pulls them out and you start looking at them and on the registration papers the name of the boat, the port of call, and the ship's captain are all blank. But everything else is filled out so it still says it's a keelboat, that it can store this much stuff, and all that other junk. And if you guys take the time at any point in the next three days to like stop the boat so you can go look, the name is not written on the boat anywhere.
Alex (as Tychus): It really is like Nidri didn't even exist. But we can remember it...
Steve (as Amos): We might be the only...
Scott: A follow-up to that, Amos, the reason I had you do an intelligence check. When you reach a new port you have to submit the registration papers to the dockmaster and it can't be blank like this. You can't turn in a blank registration. That's the dead giveaway for a stolen ship.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Well
Steve (as Amos): Are those papers blank Tychus?
Alex (as Tychus): For now.
Steve (as Amos): We're going to need to put something in there. Or we won't be able to port.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Is there a port city nearby, that we could say we were coming from.
Steve (as Amos): Let's see.
Alex (as Tychus): I'd say, the further away the better. Didn't you say you were somewhere far?
Steve (as Amos): Oh, yeah, very far. Bout as far as you can for as you can get. Port Thraxis, but that's not going to work. They're going to look at a keelboat and go that didn't come from Port Thraxis.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Yeah.
Scott: For the record you guys are on the continent of Alduria and Port Thraxis is on the opposite coast. So it's a long way,
Steve: So... do... I guess it's the part where- Do we know any other towns?
Scott: Well, so that's a struggle because Gunny has stated a couple times she's never been on a boat before. So she's going to be a not help. She- her- Flifblarfen is inland and it's landlocked. So she won't be able to help come up with any port names. Amos you probably could, but I don't know what in your backstory brought you to this half of the country, you'd probably be more familiar with the other side. Maybe you're running from something? I don't know. But you're generally kind of unfamiliar with over here. Tilly you're little read up so you might know stuff. And then Tychus. I don't know enough about your back story to know if you've been a frequenter of merchant travel or not. Care to elaborate?
Alex: I mean, he just goes around places. So it would be like a percentage chance that like, he'd been to another port area.
Jake: Yeah. I mean, I think Tilly having just arrived into Nidri when the event happened. I think he had to have come from another port town. So whether that was Nedrill or somewhere else close enough.
Alex: Tychus wants to look through the log book. There's probably another port that they listed at some point that they went to.
Scott: This, I think will cut from it. But I guess now's as good a time as ever, Tilly because you said that you- I think in Episode 1 you even mentioned you just got off the boat into...
Scott: Nidri and because Nidri's on the coast, it's very very likely that you- of anyone in the party, I think you're the one most likely not to be from Alduria. So you get to pick if you want to come from another continent or not. And really because of how sailing works you can sail the world over. It's up to you. If you want to be from the closest continent or one on the other side of the world.
Jake: I think the- I mean it makes sense for them not to know about my family history and to be locally -more locally well known that I'm from another continent.
Scott: Okay. So any knowledge you have of ports would be of that continent most likely. And being that Nidri was probably your first port of call here. I don't think you're going to know the surrounding territory very well.
Jake: I would agree.
Scott: Gunny you're definitely from Alduria. We've said that so- because you've never been on a boat before and there's really no other way. Amos you’re from Alduria because Port Thraxis is in Alduria. Tychus that leaves- where are you from?
Alex: I would likely be from Alduria because I'm working with Tordek who's from a different continent.
Scott: Okay, so...
Alex: I'm going to put it- I don't know if you'd heard me but the log book.
Scott: You're checking the logbook.
Scott: It's at this point that I realized I'm pretty behind on my world building.
Steve: Uh oh.
Scott: I have all this stuff somewhere right? It's just- it just hasn't been organized yet. Because I've been too busy writing and editing I guess.
Stephanie: While you're researching can Gunny take a short rest?
Scott: Yeah. You all- over the three days you're going to be able to take a long rest. So anything you have that recharges, come full back. All your recovery die are full back. Your hit points are all full back. Other than Nedrill. There's Port Minah M-I-N-A-H and that is on this side of the coast. It's a major port. And then the world's largest city, Solarion, is a port city. Solarion is so important that the calendar of at least Alduria and probably the rest of the world is based on the Solarion Reckoning. Which is how many years since the discovery of Solarion- not the founding. Solarion was a city that was fully built and was found by early primitive people. I think I said in my interview it was somewhere around 4700 years ago. And so it's always been a great mystery of where Solarion came from and how it got there. But it was discovered. And so the calendar was based on the discovery of Solarion because through that discovery- because there was so much stuff already in the city, it was like a catapult for technological advancement for the people of the world. You know, they went from being roaming tribesmen to now they knew almost within a generation, how to farm and build stuff and it really advanced them into a more modern age. There's also a town called Stormbend which is a smaller port probably on the level of like Nidrill or- Nidrill- Nedrill or Nidri and those are probably the best that you guys collectively can come up with and the ones that you see primarily in the log. So this keelboat has gone all up and down the coast that you guys are on.
Alex: Well, I'd say we just need to make it, you know, Port Minah or Stormbend. We just got to have something that we can submit to dock.
Stephanie: I think we should choose a bigger city because it's easier to go unnoticed in there. And if somebody asked us asks us like, "Oh you were at this small town, did you run into so-and-so" or "I'll tell so-and-so I saw you" that we might get discovered.
Alex: That makes sense.
Jake: Well put.
Steve (as Amos): I agree. Yeah. Wherever you go it's the same, the dockworkers they know each other, you know, you go to a city with a bigger port it's less likely they're going to know.
Alex: So would we say Solarion.
Stephanie: Was Minah also big? You said Solarion was the biggest right?
Scott: Solarion is the biggest one, Port Minah is also very sizable. It's not nearly as big as Solarion, but it is a- in medieval turns it would actually be a city.
Stephanie: Which one's the closest to Nedrill?
Scott: Probably Solarion. Port Mina is more of a northern port.
Stephanie: Are we coming from the south?
Stephanie: Okay, then should probably- Port Minah's south of Nedrill?
Scott: Huh? No. Port Minah is a northern port. It's way north up the coast.
Scott: And then you asked what's the biggest city closest to Nedrill and I said, it would be Solarion.
Stephanie: We're coming from the south.
Stephanie: To Nedrill. Is there anything that like- unless we're going to circle around the city and come from the north, we can't say we were coming from Port Minah.
Alex: We can say were based out of Port Minah but our last stop was Solarion.
Scott: So I mean if you want to trace a line up the coast it would have been Nidri, Nedrill, Solarion, Port Minah and then probably somewhere between Solarion and Port Minah is where Stormbend would be. So I think Stephanie's argument is that there's nothing south of Nedrill for you guys to be coming from. So if anybody sees you.
Stephanie: So we have to be coming from the north.
Scott: Yeah, if people see you pulling into Nedrill from the south they're going to go: where are you coming from? Because Nidri isn't there anymore, so you would probably have to say the other side of the peninsula.
Scott: But I wasn't planning on that being a big deal. It's up to you. If you want be worried about that. I have to assume that nobody's like- the dockmaster isn't seeing from which direction the boats came in. I mean you could easily say we were thrown off course by storm and...
Scott: I mean they don't have GPS. You know, they're not going to know.
Scott: But that was a good consideration.
Alex (as Tychus): Tychus goes through his bag, pulls out like a bunch of pens, ink, you know various stamping devices if necessary. He's like, "Alright, I'll get this fixed up. Get us right as rain and make it so we can dock here theoretically."
Scott: That's your forgery kit.
Alex: It is.
Scott: So the questions are- Sorry I bumped my mic. The questions are then: the port of call, you guys are making Solarion. That leaves the name of the boat, and the captain. Who's the captain of this vessel?
Jake (as Tilly): It's Tychus', correct? Tychus?
Scott: Vantajar wakes up and he's like, "Yes Tychus. That's what you told me." And then he immediately passes out.
Alex: Passes out again. Is there a difference between the captain and the owner?
Steve: There can be.
Alex: Yeah, there can be, I would think.
Scott: I mean when I said no, I meant the captain and the owner don't have to be the same.
Alex (as Tychus): Okay. "I think we should probably be putting Amos down as the captain. He's the one that knows the most about sailing in case it comes up for some reason."
Scott: The owner shit- I didn't even think of that. So now I have to address it. I'm going to say there's a 75% chance the owner name was blank. Otherwise I get to fill it in and somebody outside Nidri owned the boat. So Alex you brought it up. Please roll your percentile. Let me know what you got.
Alex: 77. Ooh, so I get to fill that name in. That's gonna be fun. I will have to dwell on that between now and the next session because I didn't think of that. But you get to-
Alex: I do want to make a note that I would specifically change it- if that helps your- don't think about it for 45 minutes. If I tell you the first thing I want to do is change it.
Scott: So what you're putting Amos for the captain and then you're going to try and erase over-
Alex: Erase or recopy it onto a new one. I'm making a forgery here.
Scott: Yeah. I think you'd have to copy it because I don't- they don't- I don't think they had ye olde pen and ink eraser.
Alex: They might have ye olde
Stephanie: White out?
Alex: Sale of deed.
Alex: If it was bought by somebody.
Scott: Ye olde whiteout. Ye olde parchment-out. Alright, so that point- who are you going to put his the owner? I'm probably gonna try and do it without anybody necessarily noticing, it would just be me filling it out- I would list it under the ownership of Tordek Fireforge.
Stephanie: Is it suspicious that there's no name on the back of the boat?
Scott: Tordek Fireforge. Well, you guys, there's paint on the boat. You can paint it. I don't care. I'm not worried about it. But what's the name?
Stephanie: The Four Best Friends.
Scott: What about 5? Vantajar doesn't count?
Stephanie: He's passed out. He's not part of-
Jake: Vantajar's Dream.
Scott: So this this is like one day I'm going to ask you what's the name of your squad. And right now it's what's the name of your boat?
Jake: Vantajar's Dreams.
Stephanie: I feel like we need to come up with a nautical pun.
Steve: A nautical pun?
Alex: Nidri's Wake.
Scott: Aand that's the name of the boat, Nautical Pun.
Alex: Nautical Pun! *awkward silence* Boaty McBoatface?
Jake: Herman's Wharf.
Stephanie: Like Merwin's Wharf?
Steve: We gotta name the damn boat. Somebody pick a name! I can't think of anything.
Stephanie: Nautical Pun is fine with me.
Jake: Nautical Pun!
Steve: Yeah, Nautical Pun.
Scott: All right, the name of the boat is The Nautical Pun.
Alex: Is the Nautical Pun!

Stephanie (as Gunny): When we get to Nedrill, will somebody help me take Vantajar to a doctor.
Steve (as Amos): Yes.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Okay.
Scott *in Jersey accent*: Nah, we're gonna let him die.
Steve: Who said that?
Stephanie: Ok Tychus.
Jake: Yeah Tychus said that.
Scott: Okay. So we have our name for our boat and your guys's- do you have a plan for when you get to Nedrill, what you're going to do. Actually we can settle that when we get to that episode. Okay, I think for right now, Tychus, are you going to do anything with that big jingle-jangle bag of treasure you found?
Alex (as Tychus): Yeah. I'll bust it out in front of everybody, be like "Oh yeah."
Stephanie: Nana, boo boo.
Alex (as Tychus): I found something-
Jake: You're showing your sack in front of everybody?
Alex: I'm just gonna, you know, plot this out, "So I found, I found something that might assist us in our travels. While we were leaving that Lizardfolk temple.
Stephanie: Oooh. Shiny.
Alex: So, yeah, I open it up. There were a handful of gem, I believe we're listed in it?
Alex (as Tychus): Gunny, you might know a thing or two about these.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Ooh, yes.
Alex: Feel free to evaluate as necessary.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I know all about those. Mmhmm, very valuable.
Scott: Mmmhmm. These are stones. Yes.
Steve: Easily 10,000 gold each.
Stephanie (as Gunny): These are gems.
Alex: The gems. Gems are made. Yes.
Scott: Gems come from the earth.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I'm an apprentice guys.
Alex (as Tychus): Looks like we got enough coin here, to...
Jake: She made it through lesson 1: how to distinguish what is a gem and what is not a gem.
Stephanie: Gem versus rock.
Alex: This one is green.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Ooh, yes green gem.
Jake: That's a horse, that's not a gem.
Alex (as Tychus): Yeah. Looks like we got enough here to cover any docking fees or maybe put us up for a stay when we get to Nedrill.
Stephanie (as Gunny): We gonna stay at a nice hotel.
Alex (as Tychus): "I don't know what this is." I'll hold up a potion.
Stephanie (as Gunny): That's powdered gem dust elixir.
Alex (as Tychus): I'm very impressed that you knew that by looking at it.
Jake: Can- can I try to identify it?
Scott: Yeah. So the way it works if you spend an hour with any magic items you get to identify what they are and what they do. So throughout the course of this boat tour Gunny's going to identify the stones. There is-
Scott: No, Gunny. Gunny identifies the stones she finds one stone of Azurite.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Yes. Yes, azurite. Mmhmm.
Scott: Well, time out- How do you guys want to do treasure? Are you going to have one guy keep track of it for the party or do you each want to keep track of your own treasure?
Stephanie: Probably gonna keep track of my own treasure.
Steve: I like to keep track of it myself after we split whatever, you know, like Alex had it. I had the same thing written down from what we got last time. And now I assume we're going to split it, and from that point on we have to keep track of it on our own.
Alex: That's reasonable.
Scott: Are you going to give any of the Vantajar.
Alex: We gave him his life back, isn't that the most prized treasure of all?
Stephanie: Right. Isn't that gift enough? We risked our lives for him!
Jake: Yeah, his treasure is the story he gets to make about us.
Scott: Okay. So there's one gem of Azurite. These are going to be easy to split up. Each of these gems are worth 10 gold. One is Azurite A-Z-U-R-I-T-E. One is malachite M-A-L-A-C-H-I-T-E and then two are Tiger Eye. The only reason I tell you the name of the stones is I think for certain spellcasters, sometimes there's a spell component that we requires a specific stone. So that really only affects Tilly I think. Other than that, you guys, if I remember you got 2300 copper 1200 silver and 100 gold which you split that four ways, Alex. You can calculate that out while I tell Tilly: You sit with the potion for a little bit and you determine that it is a potion of healing. And then going back to Gunny, there are two stones that you're not super familiar with what they are. They're definitely not precious stones. They look like brownish rocks with matching faces carved into them. You spend some time exploring them and you determine that they are Sending Stones. Sending Stones are magical items that come in pairs and when you touch one stone, you can use an action to cast the sending spell from it to the bearer of the other stone. The sending spell is basically like a really powerful message type spell. So basically these are walkie-talkies.
Scott: But only someone with magic can use it.
Scott: No anybody can use them.
Scott: Whoever- whoever is holding one can send a message to the other and they only- it's only these two stones that are bound to each other.
Scott: But whoever's- when two people are holding them, they can freely communicate to each other. And there's a maximum distance limit based on the power of the sending spell. But other than that, I mean, yeah, it's basically exactly like a walkie-talkie.
Stephanie: Guys, if we split into teams we can use these stones to communicate with each other when we get to Nedrill.
Alex: This is team nautical reaching out to team pun.
Jake: Come back pun.
Scott: And so Alex how much- how much coin does everybody get?
Jake: I got 575 copper, 300 silver, and 25 gold.
Stephanie: And then one precious gem each?
Alex: And everybody gets a gem.
Scott: And then one 10 gold gem, yeah.
Jake: I want one of the Tiger Eyes please.
Alex: I'm gonna take the Azurite.
Scott *trying to sing*: It's the eye of the tiger. It's the... *trailing off*
Jake: *joins in*
Scott: This is sad, this is the saddle montage of to Eye of the Tiger I've ever heard.
Steve: It was, sorry.
Alex *singing*: Of the tiger.
Steve: We let you down.
Scott: It's okay. You're still shaking from The Nightmare. So it's fine.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Amos do care which one you take?
Steve (as Amos): No, I don't care.
Stephanie (as Gunny): I think the malachite, it's pretty.
Steve (as Amos): You can have the malachite.
Stephanie (as Gunny): Awesome.
Scott: Alright, so we've divvied our treasure and your guys' plan when you get into Nedrill is to 1: take Vantajar to a doctor
Scott: And then what are you guys going to try and do?
Alex: think Tilly should try and research these runes-see if he can find any-like a library or something.
Alex: And some other scholarly fellows.
Jake: Yeah, he would go to a library, university, temple- whatever they have in Nedrill.
Scott: Okay. All right. Well, we have reached a point in our tail where I think for the first time you guys have a chance to catch your breath and formulate your plan. And you have a course of action ahead of you. And so, as you sail on throughout these three days and talk to each other and grow closer and share stories, there's a sense that what has happened so far, is just the beginning. And you guys are literally sailing into the beginning of your adventure and possibly the ultimate start of your destiny.
