Scott: [00:00:26] Hello and welcome to Shocking Gasp: A D&D podcast. I'm your host and Dungeon Master, Scott Heckler. Before we launch the podcast proper, we're doing a series of mini spotlight episodes to help you get a little more acquainted with our players and their characters. This is part 1 of a 5-part series. And today we're meeting my lovely wife, Stephanie Heckler. Hello Stephanie.
Stephanie: [00:00:46] Hello Scott.
Scott: [00:00:47] How are you?
Stephanie: [00:00:48] Good, how're you?
Scott: [00:00:48] Good!
Stephanie: [00:00:50] Good!
Scott: [00:00:50] Tell us about your character.
Stephanie: [00:00:51] So, I'm going to be playing Gunda Isomelda Nissa Lorilla Glitterblaster.
Scott: [00:00:53] Woof, that is a mouthful.
Stephanie: [00:00:58] Her nickname is Gunny.
Scott: [00:00:59] Good.
Stephanie: [00:01:01] So Gunny grew up in the gnomish town of Flifblarfen nestled in the foothills of the Mycen Mountains. And the town consists mostly of other gnomes with the occasional travelling outsider.
Gunny was very drawn to those that were different from her and she loved to hear the stories they told of their travels. She could often be found following newcomers around like they were fast friends and excitedly asking them a whirlwind of questions wanting to know everything about where they went, what they did, and who they met.
She often heard them speak about the legendary nectar of the gods, coffee. Coffee isn't available in Flifblarfen, so Gunda's never tried it. She's heard it's so heavenly, it can even make the grumpy as curmudgeon into a pleasant companion. She's eager for the opportunity to try coffee once she ventures out on her own.
Gunny has no family. She never knew her parents, so she benefited from the kindness of other gnomes in her community. In a way, the entire village was her family because at some point everyone housed, fed, or clothed her. Because she grew up fending for herself, she had to learn to fight.
With no formal training, Gunny is an unpolished but passionate fighter. She has a short fuse when it comes to those that mess with her friends, which is just about everyone she meets. She'll defend them with a flurried fury rather than forming any skilled or calculated offense.
Her zeal and quick wit won her an apprenticeship as a gem inspector. Her mentor, Glim Schmermendicer, became like a father to her. And even though she plans to return someday, share her own stories of adventure, and work alongside Glim, Gunny couldn't ignore the call of the outside world. So being a curious gnome with no fear of the unknown she decided to try her luck traveling the land in search of adventure of any kind.
Scott: [00:02:45] Wow that is a very well-polished story. That gives us a lot to run on.
Stephanie: [00:02:49] I worked very hard on it.
Scott: [00:02:50] Yeah thank you for that. I noticed it was all pretty narrative based I guess. And I am wondering, will we will we be hearing a character [00:03:00] voice for Gunny?
Stephanie: [00:03:01] Absolutely not. There's no way in heck. It would take massive amounts of alcohol. I think I'm already pretty far out of my comfort zone by doing this. And I think a voice is pretty much out of the question.
Scott: [00:03:16] Ok, so for all the fans that are going to be asking about voices right now, you can know.
Stephanie: [00:03:21] Sorry.
Scott: [00:03:22] I think it's out for Stephanie. But I think some of the other guys are going to be doing voices.
Stephanie: [00:03:25] For sure.
Scott: [00:03:26] We'll talk about that and their spotlights. For the sake of our more rule-oriented followers, can you share some game-based specifics on Gunny?
Stephanie: [00:03:35] Yeah, so Gunny is a Rock Gnome barbarian fighter. She is Level 1 and her background is a Guild Artisan. I figured the jeweler guild fit well with the gem inspection background that she has.
Scott: [00:03:53] Right. What about those ability scores? People are always interested in those and they make the meat and potatoes, I think.
Stephanie: [00:03:59] I think so. She has a 16 strength, 14 dexterity, 15 constitution, 10 intelligence, 8 wisdom, and 14 charisma.
Scott: [00:04:11] Wow, those are some pretty good rolls. Those are really nice I think. I think you'll be able to live with the 8, but otherwise those are really good.
Stephanie: [00:04:20] Awesome. I have no idea what any of those numbers mean.
Scott: [00:04:23] Yeah, anybody who's played the game a lot knows, I think those are really good. You're going to be really happy as we play. So that's a little bit about Gunny what can you tell us about yourself? What's your background?
Stephanie: [00:04:37] Are you ready for this?
Scott: [00:04:38] I- I'm. For the listeners, she made a big deal, she wrote this background for herself and she would not let me read it or hear it. So this is the world premiere debut of whatever my wife wrote for her background. Here we go.
Stephanie: [00:04:52] So this is the Wikipedia page for Princess Stephanie Marie. Stephanie is the first born into a noble Slovenian-German family of moderate means. She was born in the kingdom of Euclid in the land of Cleve. Ever the golden child, Stephanie could do no wrong and excelled in school and sports and regularly outshined her younger, lesser siblings. She found her passion in riding horses and competed as a teen, winning many high honors. Eventually Stephanie met her knight, Sir Scottward, who treats her like the royalty she is.
Scott: [00:05:24] That's me.
Stephanie: [00:05:25] As time marched on, Stephanie felt called to a higher purpose and became a healer of men. She works 3 12-hour shifts a week tending to the ill and wounded.
Scott: [00:05:35] Do you also heal the women? I think they need it too.
Stephanie: [00:05:37] Well, yeah. It's not exclusive to men. I just thought that that sounded like, time period appropriate. Yeah kind of like, only men are allowed the pursuit of happiness.
Scott: [00:05:52] Got it.
Stephanie: [00:05:53] In the Constitution.
Scott: [00:05:53] OK I got it.
Stephanie: [00:05:55] Or is that the Declaration of Independence. I think that's the Declaration of Independence.
Scott: [00:06:00] It should just be people. You're a healer of people, we'll go with that.
Stephanie: [00:06:01] It should be. I'm a healer of people.
Scott: [00:06:04] Nice.
Stephanie: [00:06:04] Of humans specifically. I've never healed a non-human before. But when I'm not performing altruistic duties, I still enjoy riding horses and photographing my beloved hounds: Hugo, Rupert, and Bella. Did you like it?
Scott: [00:06:20] I am blown away at how humble it was.
Stephanie: [00:06:23] I know.
Scott: [00:06:23] I really thought...
Stephanie: [00:06:24] I had to work very hard not to toot my own horn.
Scott: [00:06:27] Yeah, I think you did a very good job.
Stephanie: [00:06:29] Thank you.
Scott: [00:06:30] Yeah. So when it comes to the game itself you said earlier you didn't know about the ability scores, which right makes me want to point out, you don't really have much experience with Dungeons and Dragons.
Stephanie: [00:06:41] I have almost no experience. I played a couple of times with you, but at that point in time when I played with you I didn't know anything about Dungeons and Dragons other than teenagers and basements with Mountain Dew.
Scott: [00:06:56] Right.
Stephanie: [00:06:57] And over the years I've heard you play in the basement with your Mountain Dew, I've have gotten to know the game, and the last time we played our practice session I had a lot of fun. And I'm looking forward to playing more.
Scott: [00:07:11] Yeah I think it's easier for you too, those few times we tried playing before, we were in 3rd edition, which is very rules heavy. It wasn't easy for new people to get into 3rd edition but 5th edition has really turned that around, it's a lot easier to jump into, it's lot easier to grasp. And I hope that you have a much better time this go round.
Stephanie: [00:07:28] I think I will.
Scott: [00:07:29] So you wrote some really nice backstories both for yourself and for your character, which makes me wonder do you have any other experience in any other game sets or scenarios that would apply to Dungeons and Dragons.
Stephanie: [00:07:40] Like I said I've only played Dungeons and Dragons a couple of times. I really don't have any other experience in like tabletop roleplaying or anything like that but I do really really love Dragon Age.
Scott: [00:07:52] That's a good one.
Stephanie: [00:07:52] I freakin' love it.
Scott: [00:07:54] That's a really good one to get into.
Stephanie: [00:07:55] And then as a kid, as like a pre-teen, an adolescent, let's say, when the internet was new to our house, my friend introduced me to chat room roleplaying. So like text-based, write this little story about your character walking into a coffee shop and brushing her hair out of her eyes and hoping to meet the man of her dreams and then somebody else- another stranger on the internet, would comment on it. And you guys would start a little story. And I freaking loved that as well. And it was something I was absolutely not supposed to do or allowed to do on the internet- talk to strangers or do anything of that sort. And so I snuck in the middle of the night to play.
Scott: [00:08:45] Probably still shouldn't talk to strangers on the Internet.
Stephanie: [00:08:48] I mean, I've actually met some friends on the Internet.
Scott: [00:08:50] That's true. Yeah.
Stephanie: [00:08:51] Tumblr what what. Not on there anymore. I'm not! I'm not on there anymore.
Scott: [00:08:59] Okay.
Stephanie: [00:08:59] I'm friends with those people on Facebook though.
Scott: [00:09:01] Yeah.
Stephanie: [00:09:02] So.
Scott: [00:09:03] So you'll be new to the mechanics, but as far as coming up with the character story and how they interact... Sounds like you have some stuff that could apply albeit sans voice.
Stephanie: [00:09:12] Yeah yeah. Not doing a voice and I'm going to be asking a lot of questions about what to do and when to do it and am I allowed to do this or not.
Scott: [00:09:22] Yeah, well don't hold back. And remember the big thing and Dungeons and Dragons, the benefit for new players is sometimes all you have to do is tell me what you want to do, and then I can tell you what to roll. So you don't have to worry about asking the mechanic, just state what your character intends, and we'll figure it out from there.
Stephanie: [00:09:37] That sounds good. Yeah I'm excited that this doesn't require any actual acting from me.
Scott: [00:09:43] Yeah. It won't. Yet.
Stephanie: [00:09:47] Yet? Oh Jesus.
Scott: [00:09:48] So you said in your wonderful personal backstory that you are a healer of people, so that's you’re a nurse. Yeah.
Stephanie: [00:09:54] Yes. I'm not a doctor. I'm a nurse.
Scott: [00:09:59] Nothing wrong with being a nurse. I think they carry the brunt of the work-
Stephanie: [00:10:04] Oh absolutely, we're the workhorses.
Scott: [00:10:05] Yeah. Anything else outside of Dungeons and Dragons that you'd like to share with us.
Stephanie: [00:10:10] Like I said I like to ride horses. I like to read books. Hang out with my puppies.
Scott: [00:10:15] Yeah.
Stephanie: [00:10:16] I'm currently being licked by one right now.
Scott: [00:10:18] Yes she is going to town.
Stephanie: [00:10:19] She's licking my hands all over.
Scott: [00:10:22] Well thank you for taking the time to sit down with this interview and introduce yourself and introduce Gunny. I can't wait to see her in action. If any of our listeners today wanted to reach out and find you on social media, what platforms are you on, and what's your handle?
Stephanie: [00:10:36] Yeah. So I am on Twitter as well as Instagram. My Twitter is MsNerdyNurse. I think I'm actually linked to the Shocking Gasp DnD Twitter so you can find me there. And then I'm also on Instagram as Stepheck14 so S-T-E-P-H-E-C-K-1-4.
Scott: [00:10:58] And I am Scott the Dungeon Master. You can find me on Twitter @HecklerusPrime. And be sure to follow the podcast Twitter account as well @ShockingGaspDnD. That concludes the session. Thank you for listening. We hope you check out our other episodes. Give us a like, give us a fave, let us know what you're into and we'll catch you next time. Thank you very much.
